Had it not been for several influential musicians constant use of original Les Paul model instruments in the late 1960's we might very well be left with the SG, Flying V and Explorer bodies. Right next to hollowbody guitars with serial numbers.Įven the original Les Paul model was discontinued in 8 years, replaced entirely by the LP SG which then became simply the SG for a variety of reasons. No records exist other than that a Les Paul model was shipped to "x" person or instrument retailer. To understand how little respect the solidbody guitars received you have to remember that Gibson had used a variety of FON and serial numbers for decades prior to release of the Les Paul Model, but didn't put serial numbers on any 1952 and, IIRC, some 1953 models. I would say the Les Paul was certainly a response to the initial success of Fender's Broadcaster, ne Telecaster.
